Helping Families
New parents tend to read all of the parenting books and put together all sorts of plans to be prepared for the life ahead, but the implementation of these plans sometimes gets left out. Raising children often involves dealing with crises as they happen.
When you bring your baby home from the hospital, the day when he or she will go off to college seems so far away. And there are so many pressing demands for money every day. So many parents just never get around to building the fund they will need to pay for their child's college. Thank heavens for student loans!
Another often-neglected area is planning for some of life's "what ifs," especially the ones that we don't even like to think about. Like, "What would happen to your kids if you went out to a movie, leaving them with a high-school babysitter, and did not come home because you were in a serious accident?" More than 70% of parents never implement a plan for that "what if" even though if it happened the lack of a plan would have enormous, perhaps tragic consequences for their kids.
What about when your children grow up? Then comes the uncertainty of today's job market. Once upon a time, workers in the U.S. typically had one employer and then retired. Today, staying with an employer for 10 years is unusual. Workers are mobile and so are their jobs! Globalization is rampant and jobs are moving all around the world in search of the best talent and the lowest cost. How will that affect your children - or their spouses?
Kevin will help you create an estate plan that will take care of all of your concerns today, and he will keep up with you and your family to help you keep your estate plan current, adjusting it as appropriate for the inevitable changes in wealth, family circumstances, and the law.
Protecting your kid's with a Safetly Plan
Do I need to do Kid's Safety Planning?
If you are a mom or dad with children at home under the age of 18, you need a Kid's Safety Plan™ to make sure you have the proper documents in place. If the unthinkable happens and you are killed or incapacitated in an accident, the police will show up at your house and find your kids home alone or with a babysitter. The police will have no choice but to call in Child Protective Services and have your kids removed from your home until your legal guardian can be reached (that's if you have named one, and if they are able to find that guardian nomination) or until the system can figure out what to do. And, that's just for the short-term.
For their long-term care, if you have not taken the proper measures to name guardians, your children would be at the mercy of an overcrowded state court system that could never determine what is in the best interest of your child as well as you can.
What is a Kid's Safety Plan™?
A Kid's Safety Plan™ is a set of instructions and the proper legal documents you need to have if you have kids at home who count on you for their well-being and care.
If you are in an accident, your Kid's Safety Plan™ will make sure your children are never turned over to Child Protective Services because the police don't have clear instructions from you. And, if the something were to happen to you, your Kids Safety Plan™ will make sure that your children are not raised by someone chosen by a judge who does not know exactly who you want to raise them.
A Will or Declaration of Guardians is not enough to protect your children in these situations. To learn more call The Roy Law Firm at (410) 655-1000.
